Romantic Comedies Make You a Better Person

As September comes to an end, you cannot deny the fact that rom-com movies are gradually making a comeback. A recently conducted research has led to the conclusion that frequent watching of romantic comedies may lead to an individual developing a more sensitive, morally open character.

Here are some of the findings received from the research:

The Process

Constant exposure to both action and romance movies for 35 days altered the perspectives and general attitudes of 87 college students on five moral hunches. These feelings, as interpreted by Jonathan Haidt base off the thought of fairness, loyalty, purity, respect for authority, and care/harm. The subject’s watching habits were broken down into four parts, a quarter exclusively viewing rom-com movies, while another quarter watched action films only. The remaining were watching either 20/80 or 40/60 ratio of action to romantic comedies.

Findings

In the group that only viewed rom-com, researchers identified that the overwhelming affection along with love allowed them to be more sensitive to 4/5 of the moral intuitions (apart from purity.) If you happen to be one of the individuals who were stuck viewing objects getting blown up and exaggerated shoot out scenes, you pretty much experience the opposite effect because of heavy desensitizing.

Another research

In a different study, researchers from the University of California Los Angeles and the University of Rochester observed 174 couples through their first three years of marriage. The sole purpose of this experiment was to examine the effects of various kinds of relationship counseling on matrimonial success.

The researchers split the couples into four groups. The first two groups received intensive, skills-targeted forms of guidance. The third group received (RA) relationship awareness guidance, and the last batch did not receive any counseling.

Conclusion

Spouses in the relationship awareness group were required to watch a rom-com and discuss the themes of the movies and their connection. By the end of the 3-year research, 13.3% of duos in the RA groups had separated, followed by 13.4% in the structured guidance groups and lastly 24.4% in the group that got no counseling.

Watching films and discussing marital issues was as impactful in keeping the spouses together, just like those in counseling programs. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your spouse and a bunch of popcorns and watch the latest Keira Knightley movie. Maybe these comedies are the secret ingredient needed to spice up your sex life as well?…
